Winter Colour

Colour contrast and harmony can be the key to a successful garden yet it is often not even considered. It is surprising how colour can influence how we see a garden and it isn’t always found in obvious places. We all notice the leaves and the flowers of the plants, but take a look at the colour of the bark, the seed pods, the new buds peeping through. Look at the area around the planting, the density of the shadows and the brilliance of colours in bright sunlight. Winter planting can have some of the most dramatic of colour schemes imaginable, yet if we don’t look at the stems and bark of plants we can miss out on this.
